How to Install Safety Lock Wire

Before installing safety lock wire, ensure the nut or bolt has been tightened to the correct specified tension. Where possible, align the holes through which the locking wire will pass, but never loosen or overtighten the fastener simply to achieve alignment.

Safety lock wire should be installed so that it resists loosening of the fastener. Once secured to the anchor point, the wire should apply tension to the nut or bolt in the tightening direction.

Avoid excessive twisting or overwinding of the wire. Overstressing the material can weaken it and may cause the wire to fail, reducing its effectiveness as a secondary locking method.

Once installation is complete, trim the excess wire, leaving approximately 4–6 twists beyond the final loop. Ensure the cut end is safely positioned to avoid leaving a sharp exposed edge.

Safety Lock Wire
